A Fiery Melting Pot
Our planet continuously produces energy from gravitational contraction as well as the decay of radioactive elements. This amounts to nearly three times the total global power production from all sources of fuel. This energy is trapped deep within the earth and escapes in the form of catastrophic earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The energy usually bursts out along the rims of ever-colliding tectonic plates, or where these plates drift apart. Around ninety percent of volcanic activity occurs on these tectonic boundaries. Japan, for example, was formed by collision forces of the Pacific and Philippine Oceanic Plates against the Eurasian Plate.
