A Most Unusual Climate
Although the Galápagos archipelago straddles both sides of the equator, it is exposed to a relatively cool and arid climate compared with most tropical settings. The islands’ unusual weather patterns are caused by their specific position in the context of oceanic currents. In addition, the Galápagos Islands are extremely sensitive to the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO).

The cooler climate caused by the upwelling of Cromwell current on the western side of Isabela allows Galapagos pengiuns to survive at Bahía Elizabeth.
